On a 6 inch run the expansion joint is often the part that saves the whole line from stress. Fitted between two anchors, the rubber sphere takes the thermal growth of the pipe, the settlement of the building and the shaking of the pump, so flanges, welds and supports are not asked to do that work.

This DN150 (6 inch) flange type joint is bolted straight onto the line flanges, with drilling to DIN, ANSI or JIS. The EPDM sphere is moulded over a cord fabric carcass with a galvanized wire ring — the carcass is what stops the sphere from ballooning at 6 inch bore and keeps the 180mm face length stable under pressure.
